Recycling Information U.S. Waste Exchanges

Recycling Resources - List of U.S. State-Specific Waste Exchanges

ehso blue lightbar

Also see the list of U.S. national and international waste material exchanges

And if you don't find the one you are looking for here, try our list of obscure exchanges

Materials and waste exchanges are markets for buying and selling reusable and recyclable commodities. Some are physical warehouses that advertise available commodities through printed catalogs, while others are simply Web sites that connect buyers and sellers. Some are coordinated by state and local governments. Others are wholly private, for-profit businesses. The exchanges also vary in terms of area of service and the types of commodities exchanged. In general, waste exchanges tend to handle hazardous materials and industrial process waste while materials exchanges handle nonhazardous items.

Typically, the exchanges allow subscribers to post materials available or wanted on a Web page listing. Organizations interested in trading posted commodities then contact each other directly. A

Wherever possible, the materials exchange presented contain a brief description of the services offered, including the materials available for exchange, how to contact the exchange, and other pertinent information. Significant effort has been made to provide a comprehensive and accurate list of materials exchanges; however, this document may not represent a complete listing of national, regional, and local exchanges.

Before you Ship Materials

Department of Transportation (DOT) and Occupational Health and Safety Administration (OSHA) rules apply when shipping and handling industrial hazardous materials. For general questions about industrial hazardous material exchanges, contact waste reduction specialists at the nearest county extension service or state regulatory agency.

National:

National Materials Exchange Network

National Materials Exchange Network (NMEN) was a cooperative effort of 36 materials exchanges across North America. NMEN offers an on-line national database of materials containing more than 5,200 listings of materials available and wanted in 17 categories. NMEN listed materials available and needed including: waste by-products; off-spec, overstock, obsolete and damaged materials; and used and virgin solid and hazardous wastes. Update: August 26, 2004 - The NMEN phone numbers no longer work - it appears to be shut down. Below is a listing of separate waste exchanges - not as efficient, but try the ones closet to you first.
